Islands Tanning Photoshoot!

There were so many wonderful images it made it hard to choose!
Thanks to Anne Cleve styling the shoot I never had to worry and was able to focus 100% on the camera.
The photoshoot was so much fun and the images turned out amazing!  Thank you Tom Boehme!

For all of those who keep asking about the swimwear.  These were designed by a local designer Shelly West.  Her line is called Haley Jaymes!  She is amazing inside and out and feel blessed to have her on board as my Sponsor.  Thank you to Islands Tanning for providing goodies for the staff!  Oh did I mention they brought in a tanning bed.  Yup...that right!  Love you guys!  And of course big thanks to Coreene  for hair and make up.  You did such a great job!  Tiffany Bean thank you so much for gifting one of your dresses to Arlette Nelson!  Arlette thank you so much for letting us do this shoot in your home!  Blessings everyone!

Behind the Scenes: Nicola's Photoshoot for Islands Tanning!

Laura here!

Bright and early, with coffees and two stunning Stephanie D. Couture gowns in hand, I arrived at the stunning home of Arlette Nelson.  No, this isn't a typical Saturday morning destination for me...(although hey, a girl can dream), but yesterday's location for Nicola's photo-shoot for Islands Tanning! When I walked up on this poolside lounge, everyone was hard at work getting ready.

Coreene Collins, our incredibly talented MUAH for the day, was finishing up Nicola's hair. A tanning bed, courtesy of Islands Tanning, was being set up poolside, and Tom Boehme (one of the best fashion/beauty photographers I've had to pleasure of working with) and Anne Rogers Cleve, our PHENOMENAL stylist were busy bouncing ideas off of each other and putting the final touches on staging for Nicola's photos!

We started off in this Stephanie D. Couture gown. Anne hadn't seen it yet, and had styled Nicola's look around it being much lower in the back then she anticipated. Without hesitation, she styled an elegant look around the gown, no set backs, and we were ready to go!

(now THIS is a balancing act)

(Tom showing Nicola how its done...another reason why we adore him)

Next, it was time for swimwear! I have to say....the Haley James swimsuits were probably the highlight of this shoot, for me. She custom makes these, and like all of her designs, they are SO flattering and fun. Everyone was gushing about how amazing these suits were, and who better to show them off than Nicola?!

I can honestly say, I could not have imagined a better team. Watching all of the elements that comprise a really stellar finished product come together was amazing to observe! From the careful attention to detail and styling, to the collaborative process between the photographer and the rest of the team, everyone worked together. Not to mention, watching Nicola in action is truly a sight! By the time we wrapped, everyone was in good moods, after spending a morning in the sun, working on such an epic collaboration.

It was inspiring to watch so many talented individuals work together. I cannot WAIT to see the photos!!! Thanks again to the lovely and talented Nicola Lewis, Arlette Nelson for living the dream and letting us hang out there, Anne Rogers Cleve, who embodies style and professionalism, Tom Boehme, the most down to earth AND talented photographer (he even borrowed a bathing suit so he could shoot from inside the pool!) and Coreene Collins for the incredible hair and make-up! And of course, Islands Tanning, for all the set-up help, inspiration and goody bags!

Stay Tuned! XO

Balancing Out

The week building up to the Cool Summer Blow Out event I worked when Dean napped, after he went to bed and whenever my husband could take over.

Last week was a success, but at the same time left me exhausted. As an event producer, it's my job to worry about all the tiny details that make things run smoothly. So much planning, time and energy goes into making sure designers, guests, etc don't even THINK about all these minuscule details, do they can focus on presenting their work and having a great time. This work is so important to me, but after a big event, I need to recharge for sure!

I cannot wait to spend the next week recovering and reevaluating my business plan. Not to mention....it's time for me to really focus on my pageant that is fast approaching (Nov 3rd!). It is important to work hard, and I give so much of myself to that... but also important to rest and take a step back. Many of these events take time away from my family and balancing all of it can be difficult at times.

I always joke to my friends that my husband and I "live on baby island," because we don't have much family around to help out with the kiddos. It's a struggle, but I'm happy to be honest about it. I'm willing to admit I have a messy house, a hectic schedule and I sometimes get overwhelmed...because there is NO shame in that. I'm proud of my life, my family and I'm proud to put it out there...because hey, this is me!

On a different note: I am extremely thankful for all that helped my Blow Out event happen! Not to mention having Islands Tanning help in Sponsoring the event...they are AMAZING. Thanks to all the amazing local designers and my interns (Laura especially) who helped make it successful! Stay tuned for exciting updates and things to come!

The Perfect Saturday Night Pre-Party: COOL SUMMER BLOWOUT!

Let's face it, summer's slowing to a halt, but we're all a little run down from this Portland heat wave. Luckily, I have something that's going to cure your 100 degree blues this weekend.

From 5:30-8:30, in the brand new, ultra-posh Sophie Chang Bridal Couture space, you can cool down, have a glass of wine and shop deals from some of Portland's best local designers. Not only that, but you'll be able to get up close and personal with the amazing women behind the designs, custom order and get the inside scoop on what's happening in Portland fashion.

I could basically gush about how stellar this event is going to be for pages, but instead, here's my Top Three Reasons the Cool Summer Blowout is not to be missed:

3. You have probably been sweaty and dishevelled all week (I mean, if we're being honest.) There is no better way to treat yourself than to a perfect, well-fitting new dress/earrings/whatever. Not to mention, knowing you've bought a possibly one of a kind, locally made item without spending an arm and a leg?

2. Sophie Chang (SophieBridals.com), Haley James (HaleyJames.com), Stephanie D. Couture (StephanieDCouture.com), Evy Curl Jewelry (fromtheheartbyevy.com) and Colette De Witt (Sonsiestyle.com). These women are all incredibly talented and produce beautiful, unique designs. They're also all pretty charming and this is a wonderful opportunity to meet them.

1. After you've got that perfect, "I feel invincible" new outfit, change into and you're only a hop, skip and a jump away from The Pearl, NW and Downtown. Bring your girlfriends and make a night of it, whisk your favorite designer off for a cocktail, or use it as the perfect pre-date prep. However you spend the rest of your Saturday night, you'll be glad you started it with us!

So, I'll see you all at 742 SW 18TH (Portland, OR) at 5:30, dressed to the nines. Get there early, our sponsor Islands Tanning is known for their amazing goody bags and you'll want as much time to peruse the racks as possible, trust me.

Turbo slow down!

As a working mother of three texting and emailing has become a way of life for me.  But often I find the message lost in technology....my words fall short of what my heart, mind and soul is trying to bring across.  And so just as through this I'm trying to save time I spend more time explaining what was said in a text or email.  A constant battle in this fast paced world.  No wonder I crave land and farm animals lol!

Pink Carpet Project: Fashion for an Amazing Cause

My day yesterday was a long, rewarding one.  With my first meeting starting at 11am and ending at 130pm, I knew that was just the tip of the iceberg....soon I would begin the process of walking in the Pink Carpet Project! This event, featuring Portland's best designers all coming together to support Planned Parenthood, represents the kind of communities that inspire me to do the work that I do.

I woke up incredibly excited knowing I would not just be supporting a wonderful cause...but also that I was part of Tiffany Bean Design's first runway show!  Tiffany Bean, who you all know and love from her shop Mabel and Zora, has her own collection that is every bit as unique and spunky as the woman herself. Check out her work for yourself at www.facebook.com/tiffanybeandesigns.

Our rehearsal for the show started at 1, and finished up just in time for me to give an interview with fashion blogger Jewel Mignon (theshoelooker.blogspot.com)!  The interview was a success on both sides...she was so easy to talk to, and it was exciting to speak with a powerful, down to earth woman about our collective passions. I look forward to working with her again, and one of my favorite things about this business is making new connections that I believe in on a personal AND professional level. We gotta support each other, ladies!

After the interview, I rushed back over to the venue for hair and make-up, (speaking of fierce collaborations) to see my friend sponsor Jamie O Neil. She is not only one of the most talented hair and make-up artists in the business, but she's a close friend and sponsor of mine. I always know, amidst all the chaos of a photo shoot or runway show, I can rely on her to make me look amazing. Let's be honest, sometimes it takes a TEAM of talented individuals to hide the fact that I've been up taking care of my 2 year old since 6 AM....

It was amazing to see all the support to make this event happen!  After hours of preparation....the time had finally arrived to hit the runway! I'm always so blown away at how much goes into getting ready for a show, how long it takes to get ready, and then how quickly they are over!  I was so happy and grateful to have been part of such a wonderful event. When powerful, creative people come together for such an important cause like the Pink Carpet Project, good things happen.

When I come home and fall into bed with my husband exhausted, inspired and smiling, I have to feel that I'm living exactly the way I want to live, and that feeling is worth more than anything.

To see photos from the evening, check out Pinkcarpetproject.com!

My new toy - And a passion my husband and I both share!

My husband is CRAZY over motorcycles!  When we first met, we spent many dates taking his moto out for a ride!  It grew into a passion we now both share.  And now I can say we are a family of moto lovers.  My oldest son Sebastian has enjoyed dirt bike riding and little Dean is soon to follow.  Did I mention I can't keep our little toddler Dean out of the Garage to look at the motorcycles.  His favorite work:"BBBBIIIIKE!"  Oh and up above a pic of my new toy:)

Change is in the Air!

Today I spend the afternoon at the pool with my youngest son, Dean.  The constant running around can be hard when juggling staying at home with kids and working from home. And simply put, kids need that one on one attention!

And so we played....  no phone and or computer in sight! As much as Dean was needing mama-time, I realized I had been needing it, too! After a full morning of focusing my attention on Dean, I found it much easier in the late afternoon to get a bit of work done.

Regarding the work I'm doing, much like life itself, change is all around me. For example, it looks like on of my events will be postponed till November, instead of the original September date.  Instead of feeling stressed or disappointed, I'm finding a lot of relief in this development. The more I learn about putting on really amazing and successful events, the more I realize there are times to push extra hard to meet goals, and there are times to slow down, and not take on more than I can handle. Its easy to get caught up in the pressure of being a Super Woman: juggling motherhood, family life, work, and still finding time for myself. I really feel strongly about making sure each aspect of my life, including the events I do, are not done sloppily and are really high quality and reflect the amazing organizations and designers I support. So, change can be stressful, but if dealt with properly, can be a blessing!

And in other exciting news....I was actually able to get emails done while Dean slept in the car!  Thank god for my phone! I'm all about carving out some time here and there when I can....hurray for multi-tasking!

So, currently, SO looking forward to the two events in August... and then the Grand Opening for Sophie Chang! Everytime I start to feel overwhelmed, I am reminded of how lucky I am to never have ANY shortage of amazing things to look forward to.

Much love to my readers, supporters and friends. You keep me inspired!

My hubby is my biggest fan:)

I have done alot of talking of my busy schedule, but truth be told I would not be able to do any of it without my husbands support. James comes home from a 12 hour work shift and takes our little one so I can go for a run.  And on days he has off half of it is spent with me working on my events.  And so yes, he puts on his daddy cap and him and Dean venture off while mommy works.  I feel blessed to have all his love and support!  Thank you hunny for being such an amazing husband!

Fashion and the art of tug a war

People often label the world of fashion and pageantry shallow and it is often true.  It is a world of tug a war between my passion for fashion and my resentment towards gossip and judgement.  I often wonder why people are so judgmental and critical towards others.  Truth be told no one is perfect and if instead of pointing the finger towards others, if we looked inwards at ourselves what would we find?  Why not use ones experiences of the heart for acceptance and understanding towards another?   I reflect on my own experiences in life and all I have been through.  All this knowledge and strength I have gained.  I find joy sharing my story in hopes it could encourage another.  Why not share ones experience, strength and hope?   Yet I look around some days and I find my heart sinks.  Ego is such a bit part of this business.  It takes over and makes you blind to the heart.  Can we share ourselves and not want anything in return? Give someone hope through your story instead of gossiping and telling another's  with a judgmental heart?  It's not giving much really.  Yet I often times see and hear gossip and judgement.  In those times I look deeper within myself and ask how I can be a better person...and realize that even listening to gossip is taking part of it.  Everyday I take in all of this as a learning curve.  And remind myself to build fences not walls.  To set a different standard that even though I LOVE fashion and growing to love the pageant world I need not partake is such demeanor.  That it can be a giving world, one where we share our experiences in hopes to find a glimpse of ourselves in another.  To feel excepted.  And most of all to feel encouraged.

Behind the Scenes: An afternoon with Sophie Chang

Hello all! Laura here, the newest member of Nicola's team: her intern! I'm a fashion obsessed writer, comic book artist, thrift store junkie, social justice advocate and... I could not be more excited to add this to the list. Nicola suggested I share my perspective on this crazy world of beauty queens, event production and fashion, so without further ado, here it is!

Today I accompanied Nicola to a meeting with the amazing Sophie Chang, to discuss the upcoming trunk show and grand opening of Sophie's newest shop and collection.

Both of these events are going to be beyond incredible...when great women put their heads together and their respective talents to the table, good things happen. One of the reasons I love working with Nicola is that we share a basic philosophy: do what you're passionate about, work hard to support people and causes that you believe in, and it never hurts to look good doing it. I'm inspired by seeing women build their careers by encouraging and supporting others whose work they believe in. If you're looking for positive influences in the fashion community, look no further.

Stay tuned for all the juicy details of the upcoming events, you really don't want to miss them. For now, mark your calendars for Saturday, August 18th, for the Cool Summer Blowout. We'll be at Sophie Bridal Couture from 5:30-8, so swing by with your friends, have a glass of wine and shop some amazing looks by some of Portland's best local designers. The best part? Marked down prices on Sophie Chang Collection, Stephanie D Couture and Evy Curl jewelry, to name a few. The event is sponsored by the incredible Islands Tanning, and we can always count on them to bring the good times.

Find the event on Facebook, invite your friends, and submit photos of you in your jealousy-inducing new clothes, please, and I'll be there snapping photos as well.

Until then, I'll leave you with my favorite photo from our planning session at Sophie's, because let's be real....planning your outfit is part of the fun. This woman works hard, but looks good doing it, with a little help from the incredible local design community.

My inspiration!  And my greatest success in life!  I LOVE my kids!!

Family Time!

Days and weeks get so hectic, between being a mother and building my own career. That, coupled with my husband's career and full plate, and it seems there is seldom time for just the two of us to just be a couple!
Today was really special because we got exactly that: "us" time! I'm sure many of you can relate, it's a rare occasion when all the kiddos are out of the house! The grandparents watched the little guy; Sebastian and Nicia are with their grandparents in Maryland...and knowing they're all happy and well taken care of, its the perfect time for my husband and I to focus our attention on each other!
So what did we do? Dinner? Movie? Oh no...not for these two. We spent our date time climbing around in the trees, of course! We did a ropes course...I've never done anything like this before and I love experiencing and learning new things. What could possibly be more romantic than having new adventures with your favorite partner in crime?!
Anyway...it was nice to take the day off and have time with my husband. Life is certainly a balancing act, and my role as "wife" is an important one. We're the core unit of our family, and family is always a priority. When we're solid, we can handle what life throws our way...and speaking of which, we are about to embark on another journey: moving!
As we are buying our first home together, a really special milestone, it sometimes seems hard to imagine throwing more into the mix. I know as well as anyone that the "overwhelmed" feelings can creep in, but I have faith it will all work out in the end. I'm grateful for my family, and for the opportunities to share our victories, as well as our chaotic moments. Either way, you gotta love the ride, and I'm never one to shy away from a new adventure.

Time for a little pampering!

Today, I'm feeling especially grateful. I get a take a break from the daily grind.

For now this means I'm off to see one of my sponsors, Jan Maybee, who keeps my skin looking amazing. This is a special treat, because in the industry I work in, presentation is everything! When it comes to skincare, this is especially important. I may have a crazy, hectic schedule, and there's no hiding that, but the last place I want that to be noticed is in my appearance. Whatever your budget or time limits are, I couldn't emphasize enough how vital it is to squeeze a little "you" time!

Once I'm finished up with the incredible Jan, its off to do a bit of shopping for some work-out gear.  Not only am I always excited to have some new gym clothes (hey, we take motivation where we can find it, right?), this shopping trip is extra special.  One of my sponsors, Islands tanning, will brand this new gear.

Part of my job for my sponsors is to make sure I promote their business.  This is really important to show how deeply grateful I am for their support! Another aspect of the work that I do, besides the large scale charity work side, is to represent myself in a way that is positive and intentional. I'm passionate about fitness, treating my body as if it is my temple, and finding a balance between the "daily grind" and taking small bits of time that are just for me, like my morning run.

No matter who you are, or what makes you feel pampered, put together, and ready to dive back into the crazy world out there, I whole heartedly encourage you to do it.

Hopefully, by the end of the day, I'll get to enjoy some sunshine with my family! This is probably the most important part of my beauty regime, right there ;)

OK...so maybe tonight I have to work on a few emails....but hey, what can I say, this is life!

Everyday is a Juggling Act...

Here is a little snippet of what goes on in my daily life:

My day usually begins at 6:30am.  I get out of bed with my little guy and make my daily cup of coffee (a must-have).  This is followed by morning cartoons while mommy gets her first round of emails done.  If I'm lucky, I get a morning run in (really hitting the jackpot is having time for a quick trip over to Islands Tanning for Fit Body Wrap...but that's another entry all together)!

Then, its off to a meeting at noon in Tualatin with Jon from Islands Tanning, followed by another meeting in the Pearl District.  You might be wondering...do I do this with my toddler?  Yes...which is a challenge, to say the least. Its hard enough to get myself all over town and stay energized, positive and focused...throw a happy little 21 month-old into the mix, and you've got your work cut out for you.  Dean is a busy little one...happy, and full of energy....but I digress.

The meeting was short and sweet.  Suddenly, I remember I must return the swimwear to Popina, from the photo shoot I had done previously with the incredibly talented Robert Hamilton and Terri Reece.  But luck is on my side once again, because it just so happens to be on the same street as my last meeting. Then its back to Tualatin before traffic hits and Dean goes into hunger meltdown mode, the recipe for a perfect storm.  Oh, but I have to pick up the wine that was donated by the very giving Jon from Islands Tanning!  Oh my...thank goodness he lives close by....is it time to relax yet?

Ahhh then finally home!  Quick dinner and then back to the computer to answer more email...

What's funny, as I sit reflecting on yet another hectic day (and its not even over), is how many women like myself seem to continue to find the energy to keep going at this rate, despite the endless stream of to-do lists and places to be. What keeps us going? For me, its the knowledge that the work I do is important, and I'm passionate about what I do. That, my incredible son, and good self care when I can squeeze it in.

Oh, and a little coffee ;)

Where my heart is...

Today I was asked to blog about my journey as Mrs. City of Roses.  I was inspired as it has been difficult with my schedule to blog on everything I want to!
The truth is the journey started long before the title. I have been long passionate about fashion and charity.  It took me years to combine the two and make a career of it.  I was a single mother of two for three years.  I struggled.  I hurt. Desperately trying to find a balance between work and being there for my children. I know what it feels like to have it all and loose it all.  And I made a promise to god, that when I succeeded I would make it my mission to give as those in my life gave to me during my single mother years.  This is where fashion met charity.  Competing in pageants is just icing on the cake!  The worlds of pageantry and fashion are not that far apart:)  And the most amazing thing I take from all of this is the journey; all the wonderful people I get to meet.

This entire experience stretches my heart and I am able to share my experience, strength and hope.  I take being a spokes person for Soles4Souls very seriously.  It is simple.  Give shoes.  Give love.  The most simple thing like shoes can change a childs life (and direction)!  I also have to say I am deeply blessed to have such amazing support in this journey to become Mrs. Oregon America!

Recently I just recruited another sponsor:  Islands Tanning!  Jon the owner is incredibly generous and I look forward to working and collaborating with them!  I hope to blog more in the future.  I just need to recruit more help with my busy schedule!  Being a wife, mother of 3, Spokes Person, Producer and model keeps me on my toes daily!  Blessings!

Despite the rain (and trust me it can get old) I'm feeling excited about the new adventures ahead.  I have several projects (events) that I'm working on that keep me fresh and excited.  One of them is for my charity Soles4Souls...I'm excited to announce that I'm working with Jillian Rabe (Jillian Rabe LLC) on the next Heart and Sole event that will take place in Sept.  We only just got started, but we have already accomplished and will continue to accomplish great things.  The support has been immense and I feel deeply appreciative.  I'm also excited to be working with Alicia Wood on her trunk show (invites will follow soon).  And also I have decided to run in the Mrs. Oregon America Pageant that takes place in Nov.  So many beautiful things to look forward to and I can't wait to see the connections that will come of this amazing journey!

My journey as Mrs.Tualatin International

Competing in a pageant takes a lot of work and preparation.  More than I had ever imagined.  I realized for us first timers it is very time consuming.  Finding sponsors...figuring out what suite, dress and fitness wear to buy.  Then you have hair and make up.  And it's not just any dress, suit or fitness wear.  It needs to be pageant appropriate.  I have to admit coming from a fashion back ground I found this VERY difficult.  Including changing my walk.  Having modeled on and off for twenty years my runway walk is deeply ingrained in me. But what I learned most about this experience is my lack of willingness to be open.  I have known for years that I struggle to trust; to let people in. Over the last 12 years I faced much pain. Including a failed relationship to the father of my two children;  thrown into the world of a single mom.  Balancing being there for my children and putting food on the table.  To caress their pain as well as manage my own.  I shut down and closed up.  I figured this way no pain could enter, but I failed to realize I'm also shutting the love out.   I failed to communicate why I choose Soles4Souls as my platform for the pageant.    Why helping others who are less fortunate means so much to me. I refused to show vulnerability, but truth be told  I was once one who struggled.  2007 I became a Real Estate agent.  In 2008 the market crashed and I crashed with it. I struggled to provide the simple daily things for my children. I swore when I came out I would share my story and stretch my heart to give back.  Soles4Souls provides shoes for those who struggle.  They do not discriminate why. It can be due to a natural disaster, for those who stay in a shelter, an orphan...the list is endless.   17 million children are WITHOUT shoes.  So while you are thinking about what shoe to wear with what outfit they go without.  It seems simple...it might even seem too simple. Just TRY and go through a day in your life without a pair of shoes.
My message is simple.  I know how it feels to struggle with things so simple.  And I'm here to help change the world one shoe at a time:)

With the Pageant only weeks away....

With the pageant only weeks away I started making a list on what needed my focus and attention.  I have to admit that I'm starting to get nervous.  This is something I have never done before and in many ways I don't even know what to expect.  Then I remind myself of the beauty of not knowing and find myself focusing on the now...the journey.  What an amazing journey!
